Close your eyes, spin while counting to 10, then stop. Open your eyes and explore the trails that lie in that direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lander and Fremont County are bursting with trail-running opportunities as long, short, flat, steep, wooded, or hot as you like. Bring a rain or wind jacket, as weather changes quickly and sometimes is difficult to see from these routes. Carry water\u2014Wyoming is a mountain desert climate. It\u2019s also important to be bear aware\u2014know which trails necessitate running with bear spray.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Close enough you\u2019d be tempted to run to the trailhead<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Locals call a web of trails about four miles up Baldwin Creek Road \u201cThe Bus Loop.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLook for the dirt pullouts for parking immediately after the first cattle guard on Baldwin Creek Road, and the trails begin on the south side of the road,\u201d Lander Running Club founder Evan Reimondo recommends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He says from there you can get three to 10 miles in (if you get creative in linking together loops). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy favorite part is running the bands of north-facing slickrock with views of Red Butte and the foothills above Lander,\u201d Reimondo notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11357\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11357\" style=\"width: 1108px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/windriver.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Bus-e1459961824291.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11357 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/windriver.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Bus-e1459961824291.jpg\" alt=\"View of the Wind River Mountains from the slick rock of the Bus Loop.\" width=\"1108\" height=\"598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/windriver.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Bus-e1459961824291.jpg 1108w, https:\/\/windriver.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Bus-e1459961824291-300x162.jpg 300w, https:\/\/windriver.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Bus-e1459961824291-768x414.jpg 768w, https:\/\/windriver.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Bus-e1459961824291-1024x553.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/windriver.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Bus-e1459961824291-30x16.jpg 30w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1108px) 100vw, 1108px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11357\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View from the Bus Loop, Libby Gadbois photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reimondo also recommends Brewer\u2019s Trail for longer runs, off of Hwy. 131 in Sinks Canyon State Park. Park in the Sinks Canyon Campground (look for the campground sign on the left going up,) bounce on the swinging bridge over the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie, and follow the trail up Fossil Hill, \u201cthrough forest and open meadow with views of Sinks Canyon and the greater Lander Front.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This trail is excellent for runs anywhere between five and 15 miles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rootsrated.com\/lander-wy\/trail-running\/sinks-canyon-nature-trails\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sinks Canyon Nature Trails<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also start here, providing shorter, highly accessible options, to the left immediately after crossing the bridge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across Sinks Canyon Road and up the canyon just a bit, you can start a route on the other canyon wall. Climb <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rootsrated.com\/lander-wy\/trail-running\/fairfield-hill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fairfield Hill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and run along the stark limestone walls that are so popular among <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/windriver.org\/portfolio\/rock-ice-climbing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rock climbers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a challenging start and an exposed route.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re going to need snacks in the car<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many options that will give you the chance to get pumped up with music on the way, but don\u2019t forget to have a post-run snack or two waiting in the car.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bruce\u2019s Parking Lot is the starting point of one of the most popular trails in all of Wind River Country. Follow the Sinks Canyon Road from Lander to the base of the switchbacks, about 10 miles from town. Park at the large parking lot on the left for access to a wide variety of running options out of a single trailhead. The Middle Fork Trail runs along the river for the first two miles to the Popo Agie waterfall, which boasts a refreshing slide into the pool below. From there, you can head back down or continue into the Wind River Mountains to explore the more than 30 miles of spectacular views, alpine terrain, and river splashing. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trail Runner Magazine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> notes that just in the 100-mile long Wind River Range, runners can find over 600 miles of trail to pound.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11354\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11354\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/windriver.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/trail-running-300x300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11354 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/windriver.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/trail-running-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Trail runners on the route to Popo Agie Falls\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/windriver.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/trail-running-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/windriver.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/trail-running-300x300-50x50.jpg 50w, https:\/\/windriver.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/trail-running-300x300-30x30.jpg 30w, https:\/\/windriver.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/trail-running-300x300-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11354\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The trail to the waterfall and beyond is a popular route from Bruce&#8217;s Parking Lot, Brad Christensen photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alyssa Rainbolt takes a 12-mile drive to her favorite post-work run: Catalyst Trail. Cruise about 12 miles up the Sinks Canyon Road\u2014which becomes the Loop Road\u2014to the Fossil Hill parking lot at the top of the switchbacks. Just past the cattle\u00a0guard,\u00a0the single track Catalyst Trail points northeast, trending uphill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI head to the Catalyst Trail for a spectacular shorter run,\u201d Rainbolt advises. \u201cTake the single track trail that traverses Fossil Hill. Turn left at the junction to Rawlins, continuing east on Hwy 287. Shortly after crossing Twin Creek and a red cliff band on the left, prepare to turn left. The parking area, which lies about 15 miles from Lander, is marked and well maintained by the Lander Field Office and the Lander Cycling Club. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnny Behind the Rocks\u2014or Johnny or JBR\u2014is a trail system that explores the desert of Wyoming and provides incredible views of the Wind River Mountains. A number of loops span the region, providing as many run options as your creativity and lung capacity will allow.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11359\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11359\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wyopath.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Jonny-Behind-the-Rocks-map-Lander.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11359 size-medium\" style=\"float: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/windriver.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/JBR-300x300.png\" alt=\"Find a full map of JBR here.\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11359\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Find a full map of JBR <a href=\"http:\/\/wyopath.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Jonny-Behind-the-Rocks-map-Lander.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its feature Lander\u2019s appeal for trail runners, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trail Runner Magazine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends exploring the backcountry from Dickenson Park Trailhead. Here\u2019s what they had to say about the adventure: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Bear Ears Trail and Lizard Head Trail out-and-back from the Dickenson Park Trailhead on the Wind River Reservation.<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In a word, epic. Head up the Bear Ears Trail (Shoshone and Arapaho Tribal Permit required) from a starting altitude of 9,400 feet. At about seven miles in, you\u2019re above treeline and among sweeping views of the Wind Rivers. Enjoy the Bear Ears rock formation. \u201cThe rocky trail switchbacks up quickly to 12,000 feet, and some of it is hardly runnable,\u201d says [Gabe] Joyes. \u201cThe views and alpine terrain are immense.\u201d Turn left on Lizard Head Trail at about nine miles in. Then, for several miles, meander an open rocky plateau beneath towering mountains. About five miles along the Lizard Head Trail, the Cirque of the Towers\u201417granite peaks surrounding a gargantuan basin\u2014will come into view. Soak it in, eat lunch and turn around before the trail dips into Lizard Head Meadows and treeline. This yields a 28-to-30-mile run.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, Evan was willing to let us in on a secret, and we\u2019re only rewarding those of you who have the endurance to read this far:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDon&#8217;t tell anybody, but the Red Canyon Rim is one of the most fantastic landscapes around. But it is also <\/span><b>critical wildlife habitat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and highly sensitive to disturbance. If you go, <\/span><b>stay on the two-track or durable surfaces (slickrock), follow <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/lnt.org\/learn\/7-principles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Leave No Trace<\/b><\/a><b> principles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and remember to slow down and take it all in,\u201d he pointed out. \u00a0\u201cThis place is more about the experience than the speed,\u201d Evan added. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To enjoy this very special run, head south out of Lander on Hwy 28 for 24 miles and stop at the Red Canyon Pullout (the first paved one on the right, not the big official Lookout with visitor signage farther uphill).
