Photo: Bill Sincavage<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Day 1, July 3<\/h3>\n<p>Start in Dubois, home to the largest wintering herd of bighorn sheep. The <a href=\"http:\/\/bighorn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Bighorn Sheep Interpretive Center<\/a> provides tours and interpretation to see and learn all about these impressive creatures. Photo: Bill Sincavage<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Enjoy lunch and lessons, then explore the surroundings of Dubois on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.duboistrails.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">foot or on bike<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Spend the night in <a href=\"https:\/\/windriver.org\/destinations\/dubois\/\">Dubois<\/a> or head over to Lander for the night.<\/p>\n<h3>Day 2, July 4<\/h3>\n<p>Sleep in and enjoy the family friendly Independence Day festivities in <a href=\"http:\/\/duboiswyoming.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dubois<\/a> (think parade complete with fire trucks, wranglers, and 10 military tanks; rubber duck races; and ice cream social).<\/p>\n<p>Or wake up early with Lander:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/windriver.org\/destinations\/lander\/\">This town<\/a> knows how to celebrate America\u2019s birthday. The morning starts with a 5K and half marathon, then graduates to an impressive parade that concludes with a water fight with the local fire department. Open-container laws are suspended, fireworks are allowed, and public picnics abound.<\/p>\n<p>Lander is also where the Pioneer Days rodeo was born 124 years ago. Known as the Granddaddy of \u2018Em All for being the oldest paid rodeo in the States, the rodeo has a surprisingly heartwarming <a href=\"http:\/\/lotra.org\/pioneer-days\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">history<\/a> and an even stronger presence today. The two-day rodeo will run 6:30-9 p.m. both July 3 and 4, and the second evening\u2019s show is followed by an impressive display of fireworks.<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to take high ground for the fireworks because the displays will rain over the whole mountain town of Lander.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"July 4th Aerials\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dq6lsezVrPU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Day 3, July 5<\/h3>\n<p>Take a short trip (30 minutes) over to <a href=\"https:\/\/windriver.org\/destinations\/riverton\/\">Riverton<\/a> and step back in time at the <a href=\"https:\/\/windriver.org\/experience\/mountain-man-1838-rendezvous\/\">1838 Mountain Man Rendezvous<\/a> in Riverton. This reenactment of fur traders and trappers meeting up to trade goods is the only such mountain man rendezvous to take place on the original place that it did in the 1830s. Photo: Wind River Country \/ Brad Christensen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mellow out for the evening with live music at the Atlantic City Mercantile, an old Western bar with a veritable museum of the West decorating its walls.<\/p>\n<p>Return to Lander or Riverton to overnight.<\/p>\n<h3>Day 5, July 7<\/h3>\n<p>Each year, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southpasscity.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Pass City State Historic Site<\/a> holds Gold Rush Days, a celebration of the rowdy and thrilling history of this old gold mining town. This year\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southpasscity.com\/grd.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gold Rush Days<\/a> will be over the top because they will be celebrating the 150<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of its founding. All this in conjunction with the 175<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the Oregon Trail, which is the reason South Pass City came to exist.<\/p>\n<p>Live music by Chauncy Williams &amp; the Younger Brothers Band will pair with the ever-popular act of blasting an anvil into the sky with dynamite.
