Una Obra Maestra Geológica

La ruta panorámica del Cañón del Río Wind comienza en la localidad de Shoshoni y sigue la carretera U.S. 20 hacia el norte a través del Cañón del Río Wind y la Reserva Indígena del Río Wind, hasta terminar justo al sur de Thermopolis. Sin paradas, la duración total del trayecto es de unos 40 minutos. El cañón, de 762 metros de profundidad, es un espectáculo para la vista, con las capas de roca más antiguas que se remontan a la era Precámbrica, hace más de 2.500 millones de años. Entre los puntos destacados se encuentran el Parque Estatal Boysen, las montañas Owl Creek, el Wedding of the Waters y el río Bighorn.

Boysen Dam

Asmus Boysen tenía un sueño y una fortuna. Para hacer realidad su sueño, construyó una presa usando equipos de mulas cerca de donde el primer túnel de carretera se abre paso en Wind River Canyon. El año era 1908 y Boysen usó la presa para producir 710 kilovatios de energía para su mina de cobre y oro en las cercanas Copper Mountain. La presa produjo la energía bien, pero había un problema. El lago que se formó detrás de la presa inundó las vías del ferrocarril. El poderoso Burlington Northern demandó a Boysen para que removiera la presa.

Boysen perdió el juicio, su fortuna, su presa y su sueño. La presa se derrumbó, aunque los contrafuertes de concreto aún son visibles a lo largo del río. Si te detienes a comer bajo los majestuosos árboles de álamo o en los campamentos Upper o Lower Wind River, dale las gracias al soñador inmigrante holandés Asmus Boysen por la sombra. Su presa creó suficiente sedimento para que los álamos se afianzaran en las orillas rocosas del río.
