Un chef-d'œuvre géologique

Le Wind River Canyon Scenic Byway commence dans la ville de Shoshoni et suit l'U.S. 20 vers le nord à travers le Wind River Canyon et la Wind River Indian Reservation pour se terminer juste au sud de Thermopolis. Sans s'arrêter, la durée totale du trajet est d'environ 40 minutes. Le canyon, d'une profondeur de 2 500 pieds, est un régal pour les yeux, les plus anciennes couches de roches remontant à l'ère précambrienne, il y a plus de 2,5 milliards d'années. Le Boysen State Park, les Owl Creek Mountains, le Wedding of the Waters et la Bighorn River sont autant de points forts de la région.

Barrage de Boysen

Asmus Boysen nourrissait un rêve et possédait une fortune. Pour alimenter son rêve, il construisit un barrage à l'aide d'attelages de mules, près de l'endroit où le premier tunnel routier s'enfonçait dans le canyon de Wind River. C'était en 1908 et Boysen utilisa le barrage pour produire 710 kilowatts d'électricité destinés à sa mine de cuivre et d'or située sur la montagne voisine de Copper Mountain. Le barrage fonctionnait correctement, mais un problème surgit : le lac qui s'était formé en amont inondait la voie ferrée. La puissante compagnie Burlington Northern intenta un procès à Boysen pour exiger la démolition du barrage.

Boysen perdit son procès, sa fortune, son barrage et son rêve. Le barrage s'effondra, mais les culées en béton restent visibles le long de la rivière. Si vous faites une halte pour déjeuner à l'ombre des majestueux peupliers ou aux campings d'Upper ou Lower Wind River, pensez à remercier cet immigrant néerlandais visionnaire, Asmus Boysen, pour l'ombre qu'il nous offre. Son barrage avait généré suffisamment de limon pour permettre aux peupliers de s'implanter sur les rives rocheuses de la rivière.
