El martes 10 de septiembre, Charene Herrera, Michael Morris y Helen Wilson bajaron a la cueva Boulder Choke Cave con Skylar Sargent y Ella Sokolowski de Sinks Canyon State Park.

El sistema de cuevas de ⅛ de milla de largo, que oscila entre 20 y 100 pies de profundidad, fue descubierto en los años 90 por un miembro del personal de Sinks Canyon State Park. Es una serie de cavernas de piedra caliza que se inundan y drenan cada año con el deshielo de primavera. La entrada está oculta en un montón de rocas sin características distintivas y requiere flexibilidad y valentía para atravesar la abertura de 16" x 16". Una vez que los aventureros atraviesan el apriete inicial, deben arrastrarse por un túnel de 20 pies antes de que el sistema de cuevas se abra a una sala lo suficientemente grande para albergar cómodamente a un grupo de 10 personas. La sala más grande tiene más de 80 pies de ancho e incluye una vista del río Popo Agie mientras fluye bajo tierra.

Además de explorar las diversas salas, Charene, Michael y Helen también tuvieron la oportunidad de ver peces viviendo en las piscinas subterráneas. Estos peces viven en completa ausencia de luz y por lo tanto han perdido su pigmento, por lo que aparecen blancos.

Los tours de cuevas están disponibles de mediados de agosto a mediados de abril. El tour incluye todo el equipo de espeleología, ropa protectora, equipo de seguridad y una guía de cuevas capacitada. Los participantes aprenden sobre la geología del sistema de cuevas, formas de vida microbiana únicas llamadas snottites y cómo es experimentar una ausencia absoluta de luz.
