Wyoming’s Wind River Country is situated near the heart of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. This August, 350 cyclists will explore this region of the ecosystem on the weeklong Cycle Greater Yellowstone tour.

“We always encourage people to go beyond Yellowstone and slow down in Wind River Country, and this cycling tour is a great way to do just that,” said Paula McCormick, marketing director for the Wind River Visitors Council.

The route will start in Cody Aug. 11 before traveling south to and through Wind River Country/Fremont County Aug. 12–18. The Wind River Canyon and Boysen Reservoir, small towns of Shoshoni and Pavillion, Wind River Indian Reservation, Dubois and Togwotee Pass, and Lander and Sinks Canyon will all be featured stops along the stunning route through scenic and diverse landscapes. See the full route here.

“Along the way, camping and daily excursions are provided through nonprofit organizations in the area, so the ride has been able to take part in a community grant program that has given back about $175,000 to the various nonprofits on the route over the years,” explained Cycle Greater Yellowstone Coordinator Jennifer Drinkwalter. “We call that a win-win-win for the local organizations, the riders, and the Greater Yellowstone Coalition.”

The group will camp in the host communities of Thermopolis, Pavillion, Dubois and Lander. Stop by the camp to meet participants and organizers. Expect to see them around town as well as on the road.

The tour website states, “The area outside of Yellowstone National Park may not be protected as a national park, but it is arguably one of the last great wild places in the world.”

The Wind River Visitors Council agrees and believes 350 cyclists will, too.
