Wildlife Watching
Wildlife is part of everyday life around Dubois. In winter, elk herds fill the valleys, while bighorn sheep, moose and migratory birds move through the surrounding mountains and waterways.
The Elk of Whiskey Mountain
Each winter, thousands of elk gather near Dubois, creating one of the region’s most memorable sights. Herds settle along the slopes of Whiskey Mountain and the nearby Inberg-Roy Wildlife Habitat Management Area from mid-November through April.
Throughout the year, the area supports a wide range of wildlife. Watch for bighorn sheep, mule deer and moose, along with black bears in nearby forests. Mountain lions, wolves and occasionally grizzly bears also move through the region, while rivers and wetlands draw a variety of birdlife.
Public Lands and Trails
